      Officers respond to shooting at Smokey Joes Cafe

      Amarillo police officers responded to a call at Smokey Joe's Texas Cafe on 6th Street on April 10 on the report of a shooting.

      Once on scene, officers found a white male, 37, in the parking lot, suffering from a gunshot wound to the stomach. Witnesses say he appeared to be shot by another man, who was still present on the lot.

      The shooter, 49, identified himself to offiers claiming he fired a .380 in self-defense after the other man attacked him, knocked him down, and was striking him in the face repeatedly with his fist.

      Investigating officers interviewed witnesses and reviewed surveillance camera video of the shooting. The shooter was the interviewed by detectives and released pending additional information and referral of the case to the 47th District Attorney's Office.

      The wounded man was taken by ambulance to the hospital where he remains with what are now considered to be non-life threatening injuries.
