New control tower nearing completion at Vance AFB

ENID, Okla. (AP) - The commander of the 71st Flying Training Wing at Vance Air Force Base says the facility's new control tower should open sometime this year.

The tower has been in the planning stages for years and has been under construction since 2012. But Col. Darren James tells the Enid News & Eagle that the tower is expected to open sometime during 2014.

The new tower will be taller and larger than the current tower, which was completed in 1972. It will be 6,655 square feet - compared to the current 2,294-square-foot tower.

Officials say the Air Force is expected to take occupancy of the new tower in July. The base will then have 60 days to move all equipment and furnishings out of the old tower before it is demolished.
