Man arrested after standoff with police, SWAT

UPDATE: According to APD the felon in possession of a weapon charge is from Deaf Smith County and the aggravated assault with a deadly weapon charge was from Castro County.

UPDATE: The arrested suspect has been identified. According to APD 38-year-old Rene Rivera was arrested on aggravated assault and felon in possession of a firearm. Charges that stem from an August shooting in Castro County. It was believed that Rivera was armed or had to access to firearms which prompted the evacuation. Rivera was booked into the Randall County. APD has lifted the evacuation, residents are allowed to return to their homes at this time.

A Hispanic male is in custody after a two hour standoff with police.

According to Amarillo Police Department, officers were trying to serve a felony warrant in the 3600 block of Fleetwood at approximately 3:30 p.m. As officers tried to apprehend the suspect, the suspect refused to come out of the residence. This prompted an evacuation of the area surrounding the residence at 4:30 p.m.

The suspect finally turned himself in to police without further incident at approximately 6:20 p.m. APD is going to make the perimeter surrounding the area much smaller as their investigation continues.
