Man arrested after hit and run, evading arrest

While Amarillo Police Department Officers were responding to a traffic fatality in the area of 9th and south Pierce, officers observed a hit and run accident as they were directing traffic Saturday morning at approximately 2:20 a.m. in the area of 9th and south Taylor.

Police broadcast a description of the runaway vehicle and it was later spotted by a patrol officer driving westbound on the frontage road near Interstate 40 and Polk. The officer followed the vehicle as it sped through streets and a traffic light. The vehicle exited on Coulter when a front wheel came off the rim. The vehicle finally came to a stop in a parking lot in the 8200 block of Amarillo Boulevard west.

According to APD, the 2003 Dodge pickup was severely damaged and the driver showed signs of being intoxicated. The driver of the pickup was identified as 41-year-old William Marvin Kirk. Police determined that Kirk was the suspect who rear-ended a vehicle and then drove away from the scene.

Kirk was later booked into Potter County Correctional Center for driving while intoxicated, evading arrest in a motor vehicle and possession of drug paraphernalia.

APD said the victim who was rear ended was transported to a local hospital with non life-threatening injuries.
