Local lights powered by wind turbines

Everyone knows we have an abundance of wind across the panhandle and now TxDot is putting it to good use. They've installed wind turbines to power lights right above stop signs.

On days the wind isn't howling, they've installed solar panels as a back-up. They say it helps save money on electricity and is making the panhandle more eco-friendly.

"If you were to put electric drop it would cost thousands and thousands of dollars, plus the money would have to be spend every month to the electrics company to power those lights," said Paul Braun, the TxDot Spokesman.

You can spot the turbines along McCormick and I-27 and at US 60 by Westgate at Pantex.
