Amarillo Habitat for Humanity announced its 99th house blessing will take place at 4 p.m. today.

Viyane Nzeyimana and Alphonsine Ntahomvukiye and their four children will be receiving the keys to Habitat's 99th home, located at 2703 S. Houston.

Viyane and Alphonsine completed 500 volunteer hours by working on other families' homes, working at the Amarillo Habitat for Humanity ReStore and/or helping with other projects at the nonprofit.

The future homeowners also attended 30 hours of educational classes that focused on financial stewardship, basic maintenance skills and the responsibilities of owning a home. All of this work was completed while balancing jobs and a six-person household.

Viyane and his family are looking forward to having more space and becoming first-time homeowners. Viyane says that "he is very excited and everything is good."

The family worked together to meet the requirements of the program and are ready to enjoy the benefits of their hard work. Amarillo Habitat for Humanity partner families are chosen by a Family Selection Committee who considers multiple factors including the HUD Median Family Income Chart, employment history and credit references.

The formal application process also includes a current home assessment to establish need. Mortgages are based on a 25-year note, with no interest added. House payments, including insurance, taxes, and principal, are generally between $400 and $600 per month. Principal payments are used to fund the building of future homes for other, qualified partner families.

Amarillo Habitat for Humanity is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to building safe, affordable housing for qualified, low-income families. Founded in 1981, Amarillo Habitat for Humanity has built or rehabbed more than 99 homes in our community.
