CNN -- T
he storm system that's brought death and destruction to the South is heading north.
Since Sunday, at least 38 people have died because of tornadoes, flooding, win and rain.
Florida's panhandle was hit hard, and just last night there was an explosion at a county jail there.
Authorities are investigating whether the gas explosion at the jail in Pensacola was due to the weather.
The building collapsed, killed two and injured 100 inmates. Three inmates are unaccounted for, but the sheriff is unsure if those inmates died inside or if somehow, in the chaos, they managed to escape.
The National Weather Service said nearly 19 inches of rain fell in Alabama and Florida in just 24 hours, causing damage to roadways, homes, cars, and possibly the gas explosion at the jail.
ATF and state fire marshall will be investigating the blast.
