House approves redistricting map

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) - The Texas House approved political maps for the Texas House and Senate as well as congressional districts, over the objections of Democrats who claim they discriminate against minorities.
Pending a formal vote, the Texas Legislature gave preliminary approval on Thursday to maps that largely mirror those drawn by federal judges in San Antonio. Gov. Rick Perry called the Legislature into special session to approve the 2012 maps to end a lawsuit that could have changed the maps again for 2014.
Republican Redistricting Chairman Drew Darby unexpectedly accepted some tiny changes to the Texas House map, prompting outrage from Democrats who want more extensive changes and conservative Republicans who saw political machinations at work.
Time is running out for lawmakers to pass all of the special session's measures by Monday.
