According to the Amarillo Police Department 33-year-old Rudy Jose Gonzales was arrested Wednesday after a man caught Gonzales burglarizing his home.
APD said officers were dispatched the 3000 block of southwest 7th after the victim followed Gonzales from the victim's residence in the 300 block of north Virginia. The homeowner told officers that he followed Gonzales because he tried to stop Gonzales as he walked out of his home but Gonzales got into a white Ford pickup and drove away.
According to APD, the entire incident was initiated by a neighbor who noticed the white pickup and notified the homeowner.
When officers arrived at the residence in the 3000 block of southwest 7th they made contact with a female resident and were given permission to search the residence. Inside, officers found an entrance to a crawl space and could tell that it had recently been used. Officers then requested a K-9 Unit but the suspect surrendered to police as the dog was brought into the residence.
According to APD, officers then searched the crawl space and found jewelry that had been reported stolen by the victim who followed Gonzales to the residence. Officers also searched the pickup, APD said. Inside the truck officers found property belonging to another reported burglary from the 400 block of south Independence.
Gonzales was arrested and charged with two counts of burglary of a habitation and booked in to the Potter County Detention Center.
26 home burglaries have been reported to APD in the past week, APD said. APD said homeowners can protect each other by being alert and noticing suspicious vehicles parked or prowling neighborhoods.
