Horses for Heroes, a non-profit organization made up of equestrian facilities nationwide, is designed to introduce troops, veterans, first responders and their families to horses.
There is a similar program in the Panhandle that allows the public to spend quality time with horses in need of care and attention. Panhandle Safe Hayven is a facility in the Panhandle that allows people to learn the ropes of proper horse care. Their goal is to offer help to horse owners in times of natural or personal disaster, rehabilitating abused and neglected equines, and place equines in approved adoptive homes. To achieve their goals they do need the Panhandles help and volunteers are always welcome!
Experts say taking care of an animal, especially an animal with a calming presence such as a horse, is a natural stress reliver and a fun way to stay active.
