Gruver woman dies in wreck, weather contributing factor

Troopers with the Texas Department of Transportation released the details of a fatal accident that happened near Gruver Tuesday morning.

Troopers said that Shirley Lowe and passenger Charlene Spivey, both of Gruver, were in a Buick SUV traveling southbound on SH 136 about 4 miles north of Gruver in the Texas Panhandle. Troopers said the Buick crossed over into oncoming traffic, was hit by a semi traveling in the opposite direction, and then rear ended by a truck.

Both of the people in the Buick were taken to the Hansford County Hospital. The passenger, 79-year-old Charlene Spivey, passed away later Tuesday afternoon from her injuries.

Troopers said the extremely low visibility caused by the blowing snow was a contributing factor in this accident.
