The Potter County Fire Department is battling a blaze near the Canadian River.

The fire started sometime in the 3 p.m. hour on Wednesday, along US-287 less than one mile north of the Canadian River, according to Potter County Fire Chief Richard Lake.

The fire is being referred to as the Kritser East fire by the Texas A&M Forest Service.

Lake said the fire has burned about 50 to 60 acres so far. The flames are in rough terrain and Lake said the fire crews can hardly get to the blaze. They have called in two "dozers" from the Texas Forest Service.

Several units from the PCFD are on the scene and more are on the way, according to Lake.

Traffic on US-287 is down to one lane just north of the river. Drivers are asked to avoid the area if possible.
