Not only does a flu shot protect you during flu season, new studies suggest it may also be good for the heart! Past studies suggest that the vaccine may help protect heart patients from heart attack, stroke and even dying from heart disease.
In fact, new research reviewed what happens to patients with heart disease who receive the flu vaccine compared to a placebo or standard care.
The study was conducted at the University of Toronto Women's College Hospital. The group analyzed data from just over 6700 patients, who were on average, in their mid 60's and a little more than half of them were women. A 33% reduction in risk of heart attack was the result of getting a flu shot, according to the study.
The study appears in JAMA, Journal of the American Medical Association.
Doctors say a healthy diet and moderate exercise are also key in preventing heart attack and stroke.
