It's called Free Camp and it's hosted by area churches and sponsored by local Amarillo organizations. Like the name states, the camp is completely free. This year the camp began on Friday, August 8 and ends on Monday, August 11. Throughout the 4-day period, the 185 campers participate in numerous activities.
"It amazes me how the City of Amarillo has come together with us in so many ways to help make this happen," said Christian Heritage Church Pastor Kevin McBridge.
Each child is placed in a color coded group and travels in this group throughout the day. The camp offers activities such as archery, crafting, and music. A camp favorite: the swimming pool.
"My favorite part of free camp is that we get to go swimming because it's hot out here and swimming is the best activity to do on a hot day." said camper, Kaden Brown.
Free Camp is centered around Christian outreach. This year the focus is on encouraging others, based off of Ephesians 4:29.
"The biggest impact I see with the kids is that when they leave here they leave encouraged." said Free Camp Director, Jake Bunn.
Free Camp started here in Amarillo and has since spread to eight other locations across the country.
