OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) - Oklahoma health officials are reporting the first West Nile Virus-related death of the year and have issued a public health warning.
The Oklahoma State Department of Health said Tuesday that there have been 55 cases of West Nile Virus in 14 counties across the state.
The department said the death occurred in Oklahoma County and said it was the first death due to the virus in the state since 2009.
Tulsa County had the most cases with 14, followed by Oklahoma County with 12.
Health officials say there is no vaccine for humans to combat the virus. The best way to avoid the disease is to use insect repellant containing DEET, make sure door and window screens are in good repair, and eliminate standing water around the home.
