First town remembers the past

Mobeetie came into existence about 1875 when Fort Elliot was built. Buffalo hunters came down from Kansas and ran up against the Comanche and Kiowa.

They would have skirmishes with the hunters.

Fort Elliot was constructed to provide the Cavalry a base to try to keep the tribes on the reservations in Oklahoma.

Old Mobeetie is peaceful now.

The American Legion planted elms after the Second World War where the original courthouse stood.

It was damaged in 1898 when a twister destroyed the town.

Mobeetie had a reputation in the early days.

The gunfighter Bat Masterson killed a man there.

Charles Goodnight reportedly said the town "was patronized by outlaws, thieves, cutthroats, buffalo hunters and prostitutes.
