UPDATE: DPS says US 87 / 287 northbound out of Amarillo is now open.
AMARILLO, Texas (AP) - Icy weather in the Texas Panhandle has closed some roads as law officers warn about dangerous driving conditions for the first weekend of winter.
The Texas Department of Public Safety says U.S. 287 northbound from Amarillo to Dumas remains closed Sunday. Sr. Trooper Chris Ray had no timetable for when the 45-mile stretch would reopen. He says the roads are extremely slick.
U.S. 287 closed Saturday after about 20 traffic accidents blamed on the freezing, snowy conditions. Ray said Sunday that nobody died in those wrecks but some vehicles ended up stranded and transportation crews had issues clearing the highways.
The National Weather Service says freezing conditions should ease late Sunday in the Amarillo area with temperatures in the upper 40s expected Monday.
