"The bells of the Salvation Army were beginning to ring and that put you in the Christmas spirit and I thought, you know, I want to do something", said Eveline Rivers. "So I thought, one family, one time and I'd be done."
That was more than 30 years ago and through that one act of kindness, the philanthropist Eveline Rivers was born.
"Something very strong got through this thick skull of mine," she laughed, "that there are children in all parts of our community who have a need."
Since then, Eveline has organized the annual Eveline Rivers Coat Drive and Eveline Rivers Christmas Project each year, helping clothe and give presents to thousands of children in our community.
"We feel like if they have a warm coat during the winter hopefully they will want to go to school", said Eveline. "Either wait on the bus or walk to school. Hopefully in their boxes if they have second semester supplies, they will utilize in school."
With cold weather upon us, this year's coat drive is already in full swing.
"In the next day of two we'll have longer lines of families coming to the realization that it's time to obtain a coat", she said.
Although the workshop is packed full of coats right now, Eveline said it could quickly become one huge empty closet.
"This could be cleaned out in one night. If given an option of these sizes coming in that door, these could all go in one night. Easily, easily."
Eveline will be the first to tell you, it's the community's display of the Panhandle Spirit that has helped keep them going.
"I just continued to do what there was to do but believe me, I don't do this by myself," she said. "I give each one the credit for what is accomplished."
Because it takes a village to raise a child.
E veline told Pronews 7 they especially need both boys and girls coats in sizes 3 T and 14-16.
