The Downtown Women's Center welcomed a special guest speaker at their annual spring luncheon and fundraiser at the Civic Center earlier today.
Laurie Dhue, veteran news anchor and international reporter, served as guest speaker for this year's event. She spent nearly 8 years at Fox News, and also did special reports for CNN and MSNBC.
"Living in recovery one day at a time is the only way to do it, at least for me it is," said Dhue.
The almost 6-year-sober recovering alcoholic told her story to more than 800 guests. Proceeds from the fundraiser go toward DWC's 2 shelters for Amarillo's 27 homeless women in addiction recovery.
"I don't worry about if I'm going to drink a week from now or a month from now," said Dhue. "I just think about..ok just for today I'm choosing not to drink alcohol."
he DWC is the only long-term recovery program for women in the Texas Panhandle. Proceeds will also benefit their 2-year transitional housing program for homeless women and families.
