Detectives seek additional witnesses in carjacking case

Barry Don Baird, 41, of Amarillo, was booked into the Potter County Detention Center on a charge of robbery, but APD Detectives search for additional witnesses.

Amarillo Police Detectives are attempting to locate and interview witnesses to the April 9 attempted carjacking. There were two or three people who saw this incident that have not been identified and who did not speak to officers on the night of the incident. The store's security camera shows people standing in the parking lot, possibly watching the robbery.

On April 9, at 11:16 p.m., Amarillo police officers were sent to the Toon'n Totum store at 2024 S. Washington on an "attempted carjacking".

A white female Amarillo resident told officers that she was putting gas into her black Toyota when a man that she had seen standing in front of the store approached her. He asked her for a ride, but she refused. The man then approached other people on the lot, appearing to be asking them for a ride as well.

He then approached the woman again and told her he was going to take her car. She got into her car and tried to close the door, but the man was able to pull the door open before she could secure it. He pulled her out of the car. The victim was able to keep control of her car keys while being forced out of the car.

A witness saw the incident and pulled up beside the victim's car.

The suspect tried to get into the vehicle the witness was driving, but couldn't open the locked door. The victim ran into the store and called the police. She saw the suspect take the gas nozzle out of her car and then get inside, but he couldn't start the car because she still had the keys. The suspect got out of the car and went toward Wolflin Avenue.

Responding officers, including an officer with a police canine, started searching the area. The canine team located the suspect who was hiding in the bushes in the 2000 block of S. Hughes. The suspect was taken into custody. He was identified as Barry Don Baird, 41, of Amarillo, and booked into the Potter County Detention Center on a charge of robbery.

The case is still under investigation pending contact with witnesses. If you were a witness to this incident or have any information about a witness, please call the APD Detective Division's Robbery Squad at (806) 378-4243.
