Clovis police: Woman shot in head during altercation with boyfriend
CLOVIS, N.M. (KVII) —
One man is behind bars after police said he shot his girlfriend during an argument in Clovis Friday afternoon.
According to the Clovis Police Department, this happened just after 1:00 p.m when officers were sent to 508 Sheldon for a gunshot victim.
That's where they found 32-year-old Charity Helker sitting on the curb. She told police she got in an argument and fight with her boyfriend 32-year-old Joshua C. Martinez.
Helker said she hit Martinez in the face and he then pulled out a black handgun. She told police she was trying to fend Martinez off when the gun went off, shooting her in the arm and wrist area.
Helker then said the gun shot a second time hitting her in the head.
She was taken to Plains Regional Medical Center in Clovis. CPD was told her injuries were non-life threatening and surgery was needed to remove the bullet from her scalp.
Clovis police set up a perimeter around the area of the shooting and Martinez was eventually found in the 1000 block of Ross and was taken into custody without incident.
Police said Martinez had warrants for his arrest for a previous incident on May 12. The warrants were for Kidnapping, Armed Robbery, Assault Against a Household Member, Aggravated Assault Against a Household Member, Aggravated Battery Against a Household Member, Unlawful Taking of a Motor Vehicle, Possession of Firearm or Destructive Device by a Felon and Burglary of a Vehicle.
He was booked into the Curry County Detention Center for the warrants and bond was set at $50,000 cash only.
The Clovis Police Department Special Operations Unit is investigating the incident.
