Clovis man arrested after stealing firearms

Clovis Police Department arrested 23-year-old Andrew J. Chavez Jr. after reports surfaced he was carrying a fully loaded AR-15 rifle and another loaded weapon inside a backpack near Yucca Middle School.

Responding Officers spotted Chavez and he began running from them on Walnut Street from the apartments at 12th and Walnut/Sycamore street area. Chavez dumped the backpack outside the apartments, the backpack was later recovered by police. Inside the backpack officers found a fully loaded .223 AR-15 and a loaded Walther P99 9mm pistol.

Due to the incident Yucca Middle School and Parkview Elementary were locked down while Police searched for the suspect.

Officers later found Chavez hiding behind bushes located on the east side of the old radio station at 10th and Sycamore Street. He was taken into custody without incident. Chavez was not armed when he was arrested, but he was in possession of marijuana. He also had an arrest warrant for battery on a police officer and was an absconder from the N.M. Department of Corrections Probation/Parole Department.

CPD said further investigation revealed that the backpack and firearms were stolen from a residence on Kingston Ave. Officers are still investigating.

Chavez was booked into the Curry County Adult Detention Center.
