UPDATE - 6/6/14 4 P.M.:
The City of Amarillo downtown utility project is now scheduled to begin Wed., June 11, instead of June 6.
Closures and delays in downtown are expected as the City completes a ultility project.
The project will begin June 9 as construction of a sanitary sewer main and other associated utility facilities from S.E. 5th Ave. south to SE 8th Ave begins.
Work is expected to also take place in the area of S.E. 7th Avenue and S.E. 8th Avenue from South Pierce Street east to the Buchanan Street and Lincoln Street alley.
Traffic on Pierce Street will be merged into one lane beginning at S.E. 4th Avenue until S.E. 8th Avenue. S.E. 6th, S.E. 7th, and S.E 8th Avenues will be closed to through traffic during this construction. There will be large, heavy construction equipment working throughout this worksite and, as a result, portions of pedestrian sidewalks will also be closed.
The work is scheduled for completion on or before Wednesday, November 26, 2014. Motorists are encouraged to take alternate routes to their destinations and are asked to drive with extreme caution through the construction area. Pedestrians should also take alternate routes to their destinations.
The City of Amarillo would like to thank residents and area motorists in advance for their patience through the duration of the project. The City and its private contractor will work hard to minimize any adverse effects of this closure to area motorists and residents.
