City to send notice to water customers regarding pH meter failure on May 17-18

Amarillo water customers will receive in the mail this week a Notice related to the violation of a surface water treatment technique, as required by Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) regulations. The TCEQ sets minimum water quality standards for public drinking water, which includes enforceable treatment technique requirements for drinking water.
The notice is prompted by the failure of a meter that measures pH of drinking water at the treatment plant over the weekend of May 17-18. The public was never in any danger and the water continued to be properly treated.
â??We regret the error in not recording the pH levels manually while the meter was out of order,â?? says Floyd Hartmann, assistant director of Utilities. â??The City has since repaired the meter and re-trained employees on the manual backup system for testing pH if the meter fails again.â??
The public is asked to please share this information with all the other people who drink this water, especially those who may not have received the notice directly (for example, people in apartments, nursing homes, schools, and businesses). You can do this by posting this notice in a public place or distributing copies by hand or mail.
