City pools ready for summer

It's Memorial Day weekend and even though it's the unofficial start to summer, the city's pools and splash pads have officially opened.

Temperatures continue to climb, and it's that time of year to cool off.

The Southeast, Southwest, and Thompson pools officially opened this weekend for some summer fun. Several people at Thompson pool enjoyed an afternoon of swimming and water slides.

The staff expects the turnout to grow this summer with lots of fun activities planned like family days, swim lessons, and Sammy's birthday.

"Sammy is Sammy the seal. He is our mascot for the city of Amarillo's Aquatics Department," said Aquatic Supervisor Shelley Gallagher. "He's very, very popular and a lot of kids like getting their pictures taken with him."

The pools will be open every day starting the first week in June.
