CISD to consider firearms and ammo storage on campus

The Canyon ISD Board of Education will host their public meeting on June 17, 2013 to propose a resolution that would authorize certain licensed peace officers to store firearms and ammunition on school premises.

At 7:00 p.m. the school board will discuss allowing 2 certified campus liaison officer at Canyon High School and Randall High School to store firearms and ammunition in designated firearm safes. The CISD Director of Administration Caleb McClure said only the 2 certified peace officer would be able to have electronic access to the safe.

"I think they would have to really be careful about where they put them and only have certain people, only the officers that were licensed, to take take care of them if they were stored," said CISD Parent Kathy Gilmore.

McClure assured that no CISD administrators, teacher, or students would have access to the firearms or ammunition. He also said that safety for students and faculty is the number one concern for the school district.
