The Charles E. Warford Activity Center held its grand opening Saturday afternoon.

The event, hosted by the City of Amarillo's Parks and Recreation department, included an opening ceremony followed by refreshments, organized activities, open-use of the updated gym and pool and facility tours.

The opening ceremony recognized project partners with the Warford family. Family fun activities consisted of pickleball, arts and crafts and gym and pool games.

Organizers said they are happy to be able to bring back a piece of Amarillo history.

"You talk to a number of residents in this area that in 1965 when [the center] opened, [they] maybe learned how to swim here, many learn how to dance here," Rod Tweet, Director of Amarillo Parks and Recreation said. "They recreated here, they socialized here, and when you take that out of a community-immediate neighborhood, obviously there is an impact. But to bring that back, we hope bigger and better, is a tremendous advantage as far as the quality of life for the community."

The center will have an after school program and organizers tell ABC 7 News they will add a daycare program in the spring.
