A car fire near Highland Park ISD Friday caused a short evacuation of a portion of the school.

Potter County Fire & Rescue Chief Richard Lake said their crews and the Amarillo Fire Department responded to the incident at the school's Mayfield Activity Center around 9:25 a.m.

That's where an engine problem or mechanical failure is suspected to have caused a car to become fully engulfed in flames. The car was also driven up on the sidewalk and Lake said a mechanical issue might be the cause of the car not stopping.

Lake said there were no injuries because of the incident but the activity center was briefly evacuated as a precaution.

According to Lake, the fire was under control in about 10 minutes.

The Amarillo Fire Marshall was called to determine exactly what happened.
