Caprock HS students use artistic talents to help MS Society

Caprock High School students are doing something special right now to give back to their community. They're taking their love of art and using it to help the MS Society.

Amarillo students were asked to participate in a contest to create the Bike MS jerseys for that agency's event next month. Three students from Caprock were chosen as the winners. Pronews 7 is featuring their accomplishments in this week's Region 16 Spotlight on Education.

These students say art is one of their passions. That made it that much easier for them to answer this "jersey challenge".

"I told them that their contribution is going to go to a great deal of distance not only for their talents to donate, but also their spirit of their ability in doing this event," said Caprock Art Teacher, Melinda Anderson.

Dozens of entries were narrowed down to just three. All incorporate the MS Society's logo and the Palo Duro Canyon, because this year there's a new route for riders that's around the rim of the canyon.

"We took the entries and assigned a number to them and then staff and committee members narrowed it down to 12 finalist. And then from those 12 we picked the top three," said MS Society, April Brownlee.

"I'm just happy to draw for the people that are riding around the Canyon for MS. I didn't know I was going to win in the first place," said Caprock Freshman, Jordan Atkinson.

Jordan's jersey will go to the Bike MS top fundraiser. Zaidee's will be the touring jersey.

"I just went with it and put my mind to it and just went at it. I makes me feel good because its for a good cause," said Caprock Sophomore, Zaidee Hurd.

Another student designed an event t-shirt that will go to all the volunteers and other participants.

"The honors was all ours those kids can come up with amazing designs that us boring old adults could never ever fathom never even come to that level of creativity," said Brownlee.

The students will get a framed jersey as a thank you for contributing their talents to the cause.

Bike MS will be held June 22nd and 23rd. The first day, Saturday is a 105 mile ride. On Sunday it's a 30 mile ride. This is one the organization's biggest fundraisers of the year. Click here for more information.
