Breast cancer without an operating room? Could new advances one day take the knife out of breast cancer treatment?
C urrently there are only two major options when it comes to removing tumors in the breast, a lumpectomy - which removes the tumor and as little additional tissue as possible, and a mastectomy.
A very preliminary study, as reported by Doctor Timothy Johnson, presents the chance of another option, one that involves no knives and no cuts. Italian researchers explored using focused ultrasound waves to heat and destroy cancer tissue. In checking after surgery they found that in 10 of 12 women, the ultrasound was successful in removing all of the cancer. In the other two, it removed 85 percent of the tumor, giving medical professionals hope of one day taking breast cancer out of the OR.
