Police investigate after crash, shots fired in Southwest Amarillo
AMARILLO, Texas (KVII) —
Amarillo police say a shots fired call and a wreck near 45th Avenue and South Coulter Street Tuesday night are connected.
According to APD, officers were sent to a shots fired call around 10:30 p.m. on a crash at 45th Avenue and Chandler Street. When officers arrived on the scene, they found a white 2000 Buick had come to a rest on its top after striking a wooden utility pole.
A red 2005 Dodge Ram pickup had also come to rest after striking two cars parked in a driveway, as well as a fence and a storage building behind a home on Chandler Street, police said.
APD said a passenger from the Buick and the driver of the pickup were still at the scene, however, the driver of the Buick had left the scene.
Police said initial investigation indicated that before the crash, both vehicles had been northbound on Coulter Street and turning eastbound onto 45th Avenue when there was a minor collision between the two. Someone inside the Buick fired shots at the pickup and both vehicles continued to travel eastbound.
According to police, the driver of the pickup hit the passenger side of the Buick on purpose and both drivers lost control, leading to the crash.
Upon investigation, officers did find spent cartridge casings on the street near 45th Avenue and South Coulter Street. A handgun was also recovered from the Buick.
Police said the passenger of the Buick and the driver of the pickup were interviewed and released pending investigation.
APD said no one has claimed any injury from the incident.
