APD: Officer finds 71lbs of marijuana during stop

61-year-old Gilbert Earl Desoto was arrested Friday night after Amarillo Police Department officers found 71 pounds of marijuana during a traffic stop on Interstate 40.
According to APD, an officer stopped Desoto for speeding on Interstate 40 near Western at approximately 9:50 p.m. Friday night. APD said the officer was given consent to search the vehicle during the stop. As the officer searched the vehicle he found a duffle bag in the trunk containing several vacuum-sealed bags with marijuana inside.
APD said each bag weighed anywhere from two to seven pounds each with a combined weight of 71 pounds. According to APD, the estimated street value of the drugs is $300,000.
Desoto was identified as the driver of the vehicle and booked into the Potter County Detention Center for possession of marijuana.
