30-year-old Robert Louis Bennett was arrested early Sunday morning and charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon after shooting another man earlier that morning in Amarillo.
Amarillo Police Department said that officers responded to a shooting report in the 3600 block of south Lipscomb at approximately 3:26 a.m. On December 8, 2013. When officers arrived at the scene they found 35-year-old Aaron Miller inside the residence with a gunshot wound in his chest. Miller was taken to a local hospital with non life-threatening injuries.
Investigators learned that Miller and Bennett had been involved in a physical altercation before the shooting took place, Bennett then left the residence and returned later. Miller and Bennett then got into another altercation at which time Bennett retrieved a handgun from a vehicle and shot Miller. Bennett then fled the scene.
APD investigators learned that Bennett was at a residence in the 5600 block of southwest 41st. Officers found the vehicle and could see a 9mm handgun inside the vehicle. Officers attempts to reach Bennett via phone were unsuccessful, so APD requested SWAT assistance in the case. Bennett later came out of the residence at approximately 7:15 a.m., was arrested and booked into the Randall County Jail for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. Officers also executed a search warrant for the house and the vehicle at the 41st address and recovered the weapon from the vehicle.
