Amarillo Zoo visitors help feed animals

You know what they say, if you give a moose a muffin he will want jam to go with it and today several families went out to the Amarillo Zoo to serve up some special treats for the animals.

It was animal enrichment day at the zoo, where visitors created toys and yummy treats for our furry friends.

The treats included cereal strings for the birds, horse toys with hidden treats, and special baggies for the monkeys.

Once the enrichments were completed, visitors were able to watch the animals enjoy.

"The purpose of this program is to teach people about animal enrichment and to show them some ways we accomplish that." said Zoo Educator, Haley Wilde "Enrichment is a way to keep our animals active physically and mentally by giving them treats and puzzles to work with and giving them the opportunity to forage more."

The zoo will host their "Mom, I want a Snake" program July 27, 2013 where zoo educators will teach the public about the challenges and responsibilities of owning exotic pets.
