Amarillo VA works to ensure proper mental healthcare for vets

Promoting a conversation between the Amarillo Veterans Association Hospital and local health professionals, that was the mission of the mental health summit this morning.

With more veterans returning home ever

day and post traumatic stress disorder becoming a more common diagnosis, medical professionals want to ensure vets and their families are properly cared for in the Panhandle.

ecent reports have pointed out the slow response times some veterans go through while waiting for care and benefits, however, in Amarillo they are beating the national deadline!

Scott Woods of the Amarillo VA said, "The requirement is to have a new patient seen within 14 days of a referral, here in Amarillo we are even quicker than that. One reason is we have mental health staff embedded in our primary care so they can get their referrals in more quickly."
