Wed, 18 Sep 2013 15:41:58 GMT — By a 4-to-1 vote, the City Commission today voted to raise the property tax rate two cents. That comes out to $20.59 extra per year on a $100,000 house.Half the new tax will go toward the hiring of 10 new police officers.Amarillo Police Chief Robert Taylor says it??s needed," I??m glad we got the increase. For some time we??ve been short and this will help us answer calls a little faster, provide crime control and better service."The only dissenting vote was Commissioner Brian Eades. "The City Manager put in a lot of time discussing with different people in city departments about the budget and there were plans to add three police officers and discussion about an additional ten, then a blanket increase in pay for city employees."Despite his opposition, Dr. Eades did vote for final ratification.
