Sat, 22 Jun 2013 22:31:49 GMT — The Hilltop Senior Citizens Association hosted this year's Juneteenth parade on Saturday, June 22, 2013. The theme for the parade was "On the Wings of Our Ancestors." Juneteenth celebrates June 19 1865, when Union soldiers landed in Galveston, Texas with news that the war had ended and that the enslaved were now free. This was two years after President Lincolnâ??s Emancipation Proclamation. Hilltop Executive Director, Iris Lawrence said that the day is very special, especially to people her age, because she grew up with segregation and experienced those obstacles. â??It's really a dream come true because Martin Luther king said "I have a dream" and we are living that dream.â?? said Lawrence â??It is a celebration of freedom, not only for African Americans, but for all people.â?? The parade was followed by lunch festivities at Bones Hooks Park. Juneteenth is the oldest known celebration commemorating the ending of slavery in the United States.
