Amarillo bank robber captured

The man who is accused of robbing an Amarillo bank on Monday has been captured, according to police.

Donald Joseph West, 49, was arrested late Tuesday night after police followed up on several leads.

Amarillo Police Department detectives, SWAT team and narcotics officers worked in conjunction with local FBI agents to follow up on the leads.

At about 10:30 p.m., Tuesday, police said information lead officers to a pickup in the 1900 block of Gregory with a male subject inside.

As officers approached the pickup, the man took off running, police said. He was eventually taken into custody and identified as West.

Police said West was found to be in possession of what was believed to be meth. He also, according to police, was in possession of a large amount of money. The money was believed to have been taken from Monday's bank robbery at First Bank Southwest.

West was arrested and booked into the Potter County Jail on charges of Possession of Controlled Substance, Felon in Possession of a Firearm, Evading Arrest with Previous Conviction and a Potter County warrant for Reckless Driving. Additionally, West was charged with an Aggravated Robbery charge stemming from the bank robbery.

First Bank Southwest, near the intersection of 34th and Bell, was robbed by a masked gunman on Monday afternoon. Police had been searching for the suspect.
