Tue, 09 Jul 2013 23:29:17 GMT — The Parks and Recreation Commission held its monthly meeting Tuesday to get an update on the Amarillo Athletic Complex. ??Construction is complete,?? said Assistant Director Rod Tweet. ??The contractor was obligated to establish a turf and shortly in 7 to 10 days you will see the grass starting to grow.?? The seeds were already planted and just needs a growing season to develop. Phase II of the project consists of the construction of four multi-use fields, 200 parking spaces and a concrete plaza with restrooms. ??We are doubling the parking now and adding the multi-use fields that can be used to a variety of activities,?? said Tweet. Construction on the project began January of this year and looks to continue to develop with other phases of the project as funds are made available. ??Anytime you can have more athletic fields regardless of the sport itself is a tremendous asset to us,?? said Tweet. ??Currently we have several neighborhood parks that we program a youth league, play on that, we need to get them, take them out of the neighborhood parks so the residents in that neighborhood park can enjoy the park as oppose to league play.?? The project will be available for play in the fall of 2014. For more information on the Amarillo Parks and Recreation, visitamarilloparks.org
