Amarillo apartment complex goes up in flames, again

S moke could be seen from across the Amarillo metro area Friday morning as an apartment building went up in flames.

Amarillo Fire Departments said it responded to a fire in building 19 at the Timbers Apartment Complex at 4615 South Virginia. Upon arrival smoke and fire were coming from the building.

All occupants were outside the building and safe, fire officials said.

The fire spread quickly and it was not controlled with an interior attack. Crews used large aerial water streams to bring the fire under control.

Buildings 18 and 19 received most of the damage. According to the fire department, high winds contributed to the fire spreading quickly.

A total of eight to 10 individual apartments were destroyed. Three alarms were struck. The damage is estimated at costing $500,000. A fire at the same complex Thursday afternoon is estimated at costing $150,000.

The fire remains under investigation by the Amarillo Fire Marshal's office.
