Alcohol may be to blame for deadly crash

An Amarillo man has been killed after police said the vehicle he was driving hit a tow truck head-on.

The Amarillo Police Department said it happened Sunday morning at 4:10 a.m. in the 300 block of Canyon E-Way on the bridge crossing Parker Street. Police said a tan colored Toyota Corolla was driving southbound in the northbound lanes of traffic. A tow truck, operated by Ricky's Towing was traveling northbound in the middle lane of the Canyon E-Way. The tow truck was carrying a vehicle and three passengers. Police said the Corolla hit the tow truck head-on in the center lane of traffic. The driver of the Corolla, 30-year old John Cook of Amarillo was pronounced dead at the scene. The occupants of the tow truck were taken to a local hospital to be treated for non-life threatening injuries.

Northbound traffic on the Canyon E-Way was routed to the access road for about four hours. Alcohol is a possible factor in the crash. Witnesses told police that the Corolla was seen traveling southbound in the northbound lanes of traffic from the interchange area.

The crash is under investigation.
