The groundbreaking ceremony for Travis 6th Grade Campus was held today at noon at 2801 NE 24th, just north of Travis Middle School.

The campus is be i ng built to relive overcrowding at Travis mIddle School and to create a better environment for student learning at both campuses.

Travis Middle School will only house 7th and 8th graders once the 6th grade campus is open.

"We are fortunate the voters of Amarillo ISD supported the needs of our students in this community," said School Boa r d President Jim Austin. "The n ew campuses will not only alleviate overc r o w ding at two of our largest middle schools, but research suggests that the addition of these 6th grade campuses will provide a better learning environment for the kids."

Voters gave approval for the 6th grade campuses for Bowie and Travis Middle Schools in the May 2013 bond election. Together, the two 6th grade campuses will cost approximate l y $28.6 million to build and furnish.
