lmost 80 percent of 5th and 8th graders passed the Texas standardized math test on their first try this month while more than 75 percent of them passed the reading exam.
The Texas Education Agency released the numbers. State law says students in 5th and 8th grades must pass the State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness, or STAAR tests, in reading and math to advance.
In math, 5th graders had a four percent increase in passing rates on the first try compared to last school year while 8th graders had a two percent increase.
In reading, 5th graders saw a one percent decrease compared to last year while 8th graders saw a two percent decrease.
A second administration of the tests will be given in May.
