      AFD responds to Amarillo apartment fire

      UPDATE: AFD has confirmed that one person was killed in the fire. The victim was initially taken to Northwest Texas Hospital where the victim was pronounced dead. AFD has identified the victim as 40-year-old Carl Ernest Essick. AFD has determined that the cause of the fire was accidental and that Essick died from smoke inhalation.

      Tuesday night at approximately 6:02 p.m. Amarillo Fire Department responded to an apartment fire in the 4500 block of south Virginia street.

      According to Captain Jacob Oehlert, the fire was contained by 6:23 p.m. and was contained to the apartment where the fire began. The building has been evacuated and residents will remain under evacuation as AFD and the Fire Marshall investigates the incident.

      Scanner traffic indicates that one person was injured and transported to a hospital, however AFD has yet to confirm this information.
