A Hansford County Grand Jury has indicted 29-year-old Andrew Shane Johnson. The former Pampa resident is accused of killing 10-month-old Jax Covalt.
On April 18, 2013 Covalt was taken to the Hansford County hospital by his mother. Covalt was suffering from several wounds due to blunt force head trauma. He was air lifted to Northwest Texas Hospital in Amarillo where he was pronounced dead.
Johnson is charged with capital murder because of the victims age. If convicted Johnson could be sentenced to the Texas Department of Criminal Justice for the rest of his life without the possibility of parole. However the state could seek the death penalty and a jury could sentence Johnson to death by lethal injection.
Johnson is currently being held in the Hutchinson County Jail under a $1,000,000 bond.
