Tuesday afternoon, Amarillo Police Department patrol officers noticed a gray vehicle with New Mexico license plates weaving in the lane as the vehicle traveled east on Interstate 40. Officers monitored the vehicle before stopping it for a traffic violation when the driver changed lanes without signaling.
According to APD, the driver appeared to be extremely nervous when officers approached the vehicle. The vehicle was a rental and was supposed to be returned a couple day prior according to the rental agreement. Officers then became suspicious and called for a drug detection canine.
The dog alerted officers to the vehicle and a subsequent search led officers to 21 packages of marijuana inside luggage in the trunk of the vehicle.
The driver was identified as 42-year-old Shirley Wasser Elaine of Austin. Elaine was arrested and booked into the Potter County Detention Center for possession of marijuana.
