11th anniversary of the Space Shuttle Columbia Disaster

It's the 11th anniversary of the Space Shuttle Columbia Disaster.

It was back on February 1, 2003 that Columbia broke apart upon re-entry. The Columbia accident investigation board determined the cause of the accident was a piece of insulating foam that broke off and struck the left wing. All seven crew members including shuttle commander and Amarillo native Rick Husband, were killed.

Since then, Amarillo has honored the commander with various memorials and renamed our airport Rick Husband Amarillo International Airport. Husband attended Tascosa High School for one year then transferred to Amarillo High School. He continued his higher education at Texas Tech University.
