April 2, 2013 at approximately 5:56 a.m. Texas Department of Public Safety troopers responded to a three vehicle wreck on U.S. Highway 87.
According to a news release from DPS, a Chevrolet S-10 driven by Jose Dimas Valdez-Lopez, 24, crashed on the overpass on U.S. 87 due to ice covered roads. 62-year-old Manuel Herrera stopped and exited his vehicle to help Valdez-Lopez when another car lost control.
The third vehicle, driven by Gerard Thomas Meschke, slid into Herrera forcing him over the overpass wall. Meschke's vehicle then slid into 2 other cars before coming to a stop resting against the first vehicle and facing southeast in the westbound lane. The first vehicle came to a stop facing southeast with the left side rear of the vehicle hanging over the overpass.
Herrera fell to the sidewalk below the overpass. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Valdez-Lopez was transported to Moore County Hospital in Dumas. He was treated for his injuries and released.
