$4.3 million in heroin seized following traffic stop in Carson County
CARSON COUNTY, Texas (KVII) —
The Texas Department of Public Safety said they seized more than $4.3 million in heroin during a traffic stop in Carson County on Tuesday.
According to the DPS, a Trooper stopped a Dodge van traveling east on I-40 near Conway around 1:45 p.m. During a search of the vehicle, the Trooper found 11 tape-wrapped packages of heroin under the floorboard of the van. DPS said the drugs weighed more than 34 pounds.
The driver of the vehicle was identified as 32-year-old Pelaga Malakatas, from Bellport, New York. Malakatas was arrested and booked into the Carson County jail on the charge of felony Possession of a Controlled Substance, DPS said.
According to DPS, the heroin was being transported from Phoenix to Medford, New York.
